My Story
Like many of us, I have a complicated food story. I struggled with an eating disorder throughout my teens and early 20s until I finally made up my mind to make a long-term recovery. During my recovery, I became aware of the suffering that animals suffer in our food system and began to explore a vegan diet. Vegetarianism has shown me that eating can be an opportunity to practice compassion. This is one step we can take to create a gentler world. For many, it can open the door to greater well-being. Becoming a vegetarian also introduced me to the joys of cooking, which I began exploring in my tiny New York City kitchen. As anyone who has recovered from an eating disorder can attest, it is anything but a linear process. In my early days as a vegetarian, I was still plagued by food scaremongering and dogma; I hadn’t learned how to eat as a pleasure. | Over the ten years I’ve been blogging, I’ve embraced food as a source of pleasure and nourishment. My recipes are wholesome, but they’re created with a sense of fun and an awareness that not every ingredient needs to serve a nutritional purpose. Each Sunday, I publish a weekend reading post that includes personal musings and articles on medicine, science, and the human experience. These posts remind me that health and wellness extend far beyond what’s on our plates.
